What happens in a neuropsychology/cognitive assessment?

At Delta Neuropsychology Melbourne, a neuropsychological evaluation generally takes approximately 3 to 4 hours of face to face time (with rest breaks). It consists of a clinical interview and formal assessment/testing. During the interview, you will be asked important questions, such as symptoms, medical and psychological history, medications, education and occupational history, and other important information that will assist with diagnosis and intervention. Formal assessment may include you answering questions, completing some pen and paper tasks or computer-based tasks. Some of these tasks will be easy; some will be challenging; and some will start off being easy and become increasingly complex. There is nothing you need to do to prepare for these tests. It's normal to feel nervous. Most people do. All you need to do is put in your best effort.

Your clinical information and performance on the tasks can allow neuropsychologists to do the following:

  • Provide an indication of your cognitive strengths and weaknesses. This can be to establish a baseline of strengths and weaknesses so that we are able to measure change in future.

  • Provide clarification of diagnosis (e.g., dementias, stroke, depression, ADHD) and differentiation  between diagnoses.

  • Assist in treatment and intervention. The assessment will allow us to provide recommendations regarding appropriate supports. For example, by identifying your cognitive strengths and weaknesses, recommendations on interventions can include using your strengths to bolster weaknesses. We are able to also provide advice regarding management of acquired brain injury (ABI)-related behaviours of concern (e.g., aggression, reduced initiation, disinhibition).

  • Provide appropriate recommendations (e.g., tips and strategies) to support study and work

  • Assist with providing opinion and recommendations regarding the impact of cognitive difficulties on functional abilities. For example, impact of memory on managing finances.
